Websites

Listed below are my public websites. They are intended not only to entertain the casual visitor but also as sources of historical information and as a public service.
DOMESTICATING THE CIGARETTE: THE VIRTUAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN'S SMOKING ARTIFACTS
This online museum, drawing on the author's personal collection of women's smoking artifacts, tells the story of how tobacco smoking, once exclusively part of the male brand, became integrated into the lives of women via beautiful and/or clever products designed to nestle comfortably into their daily routines. Also included are selected images of cigarette advertisements targeting women. Domesticating the Cigarette is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
PROJECT DIANA: THE MEN WHO SHOT THE MOON
On a cold January morning in 1946, a small band of scientists at Camp Evans in Wall, NJ, using a modified SCR-271 bedspring radar antenna and amping up the power, broadcast a series of radar signals towards the moon and each time picked up an echo 2.6 seconds later - the time required for light to travel to the moon and back. This website focuses on the human drama, the story of the men who made Project Diana possible and the chemistry among them that allowed them to succeed where others had failed. It attempts to capture what these men brought to the effort as individuals, in their own words and the words of colleagues, friends, and family. Its associated blog is entitled To the Moon and Back: The Human and Scientific Legacy of Project Diana.
TOBACCO: FOOD'S EVIL TWIN (the website)
This website reviews some of the ways in which the intersecting claims of food and tobacco have influenced the human condition at the micro and macro levels, from the perspective of a researcher who has studied the effects of smoking on appetite, body weight, body image, and eating behavior. Issues covered include tobacco as part of a meal, tobacco as a dieting tool, tobacco as an agricultural product, and the blurring of the line between tobacco and food. It includes an associated blog of the same name.
LIFE AFTER CIGARETTES: FOR WOMEN WHO WANT TO CONTROL THEIR WEIGHT AND LOOK GREAT WHILE LIVING A SMOKE-FREE LIFE
This is the official website for Cindy's inspirational book on how  It is not a stop-smoking book per se, although that topic is covered in detail in Chapter 7. Rather, it is about personal style, about regaining control of one's life, about letting go of smoking and the comforts it provides by finding other ways to feel good about oneself and look terrific. The book is based on the author's own findings at the University of Michigan and those of other scientific researchers. The website includes an archived blog of around 40 entries that remain potentially as useful to its intended readership as they were when they were first published in 2010-11.
